Why to replace the thermal oil?

It’s fundamental to evaluate the replacement of a chemical-physical analysis when it emerges that its degradation is deep to the point of no longer provide an adequate exchange of thermal energy, the necessary safety of plant operation and respect for the environment.

Before you opt for the complete replacement of the charge it’s appropriate to assess the eventual treatment with modern existing techniques, which is often a valid economical alternative.
Of course, a correct replacement of oil must be followed by proper disposal of the oil.

What is Oil Analysis?

The Community directives concerning thermal oil installations prescribes (and in some cases requires) to execute at fixed rates chemical and physical analysis of the state of charge.
Generally useful parameters to look for are about a dozen and are those indicated by the UNI 8061.
In its apparent banality the results of this analysis gives a very broad overview on the state of the oil and when they are analyzed by an expert hydro thermal technician, altered parameters are often attributable to plant discrepancies easily changeable which have an influence on the prematurely degrade of the fluid.
To constantly know the physico-chemical state of the oil and to interpret the test results is the way to ensure a long working life to the oil, in a safely way and with the maximum performance. This gives the possibility to act in a targeted manner by treating the fluid.

What parameters should be sought with the physical-chemical analysis?

The parameters to be searched for assessing the quality of the charge, are prescribed by UNI 8061: viscosity, flash point, distillation curve, carbon residue, total acidity TAN and insoluble in solvents.
It is important that these analyzes are carried out by a specialized laboratory, and above all to be performed according to the ASTM methods, which are universally interpretable and closely related to the operating conditions of the plant.

What is the flash point PM?

The flash point PM of an oil, executed according to the specification ASTM D93 (which is basically very different from the flash point COC performed with the specific ASTM D92) is the lowest temperature at which its gas catch fire on contact with oxygen and in the presence of an ignition (for electrical, thermal, chemical, mechanical, etc.).

It’s very important to regularly evaluate that its measurement (in ° C) remains above certain values (different depending on the type of oil), because it gives an important indication of the degree of safety of the plant during use and in particular in case of accidents during operation, even in small quantities (such as rupture of a pipe or the seal of a pump).

Why to treat the oil?

Oil contamination by impurities of different nature and origin, causes about 80% of the failures in the hydro thermal and hydro dynamic systems, mainly at the expense of basic mechanical components such as valves and pumps; their store also, with the time, may cause the lowering of the rendering, the malfunction and breakage, of the components of the heat exchange, as boiler tubes and tube bundles of heat exchangers and evaporators.

A proper and effective treatment of the oil with the machines on the market today can eliminate a large portion of these pollutants. The advice of a specialist in hydro thermal and hydro dynamical systems can help to prevent pollutants to reform.

Is there an effective maintenance applicable at the Hydro Thermal Systems?

Yes, even if in Italy this type of maintenance is still not widespread. The basic principle for this maintenance,is to evaluate the system oil/plant as the two are closely related to each other and to study and keep one as a function of the other.
An effective maintenance plan shall have basically the following purposes:

  • Making secure the working life of the system with a low probability of significant damage (downtime);
  • Facilitate the best efficacy possible of the system;
  • Extend the average life of the components, and the oil;
  • Get on the whole a reasonable cost savings;
How to choose a heat transfer fluid?

The efficiency of the cogeneration process, depends on the transfer of heat from the point of manufacture to point of use. Usually choosing a heat transfer fluid that meets certain principles such as:

  • High specific heat
  • Chemical and thermal stability under the conditions of normal use
  • Working in conditions of safety and health then the fluid must be absent of harmful, toxic, irritating or odorous emissions.
  • Absent action of corrosive or solvent action on the materials with which it comes in contact
  • Fluidity at low temperatures for the cold start and low viscosity at the temperatures of use to reduce the load losses.
  • Reduced cost and easy availability
How do I dispose of the used oil?

Used oil is collected through a network distributed throughout Italy, consisting of companies authorized by the Consortium Required Used Oils (Consorzio Obbligatorio Oli Usati), which gives these oils to disposal sites that charge, by virtue of the amount paid to purchase the new oil provide for their disposal, through regeneration, combustion or incineration.

Why is the used oil a hazardous waste?

Used oil is a hazardous waste that is generated at the end of the cycle of a lubricant, if not removed properly can cause serious problems for the entire ecosystem. The used oil in contact with the skin can cause serious illness and if lost at sea can cause the failure oxygenation of the aquatic ecosystem.

Which economic implications has the recovery of lubricating oil?
